What is Human Centric Lighting?

Human Centric Lighting (HCL), has become a hot topic amid lighting designers and scientific researchers worldwide. Multiple researches have established that lighting does much more than simply provide illumination. Human Centric Lighting can connect us, affect our well being and make us better at what we do.

Human Centric Lighting is based on the circadian rhythm, which is basically the internal clock of the human body. The circadian rhythm responds primarily to light present within our environment, and working under certain kinds of light during the day can have a direct impact on how well we sleep at night, our personal health, and even our emotional stability.

Human Centric Lighting Solutions

The knowledge of artificial lighting affecting the circadian rhythm has spurred the development of lighting fixtures, that can dynamically adjust the brightness level, colour and temperature based on external conditions and schedule, to mimic natural light.

Enabling the lighting fixtures with IoT (Internet of Things) makes them intelligent to trigger the above said changed automatically without human intervention. Smart Home & Office solutions can combine lights with presence detection and luminosity sensors to adjust tunable lights from cool to warm based on time of day & ambient light. The lights can also be switched on/off based on human presence to optimize energy utilization.

Value add-on for consumers

Applications for Human Centric Lighting are immense, with use-cases in offices, industries, schools, hospitals and residences. Here is an excerpt from a research published in LEDs Magazine:

In industrial settings the study looked at a factory of 750 workers performing repetitive tasks. Typical LED-based factory lighting was replaced with 2000-lx LED lighting. It was found that while annual electricity costs rose from €42,000 (approximately $47,000) to €54,000 (approximately $60,000) for HCL, the effect was that productivity increased by 4.5%. The study also reports fewer accidents (1%) due to increased alertness, together with 1% fewer sick days, and one-year improved retention of staff.

Increased productivity, higher concentration levels, reduced stress and increase in general well-being are some of the advantages that Human Centric Lighting provides. Combine this with leading IoT platforms, to get a lighting solution that understands your needs and works for your well-being without any effort from you.
